Is there a website with some sort of interactive statistical map?

March 2, 2011 - 11:57 pm 108 Comments

I’m not sure if that makes sense…

What I would like is some sort of statistics/data overlaid with a map of Australia (or any region within Australia) so I can compare possible future areas I might like to live in. I’d find this easier than just having a written list and having to sort through names of suburbs.

Info I would like to compare:

Climate – average temp, rainfall etc (though I could always go to a meteorological site after choosing a few locations)

Average rental price/ vacancy rate

Incidences/risk of natural disasters like flooding, bushfires, cyclones etc

Unemployment rate/ general outlook on the job market (with maybe a clickable thing to show the breakdown of jobs into various industries; e.g. lots of mining jobs around Perth)

Transport – how accessible/affordable/reliable is the public transport? What’s the road quality and commute like? Is it easy to find your way around? What’s the petrol price like?

Crime – maybe an overview, like a heads-up if an area is right in between two very violent rival gangs or something. Would it even be public record to show statistics like how many arrests were made in a year and for what sorts of reasons (domestics, drugs, theft, violence, drink driving or whatever the main categories are)?

Maybe even a basic profile of the kind of people who live there. That could be very stereotypical I know, but I don’t want to move into an area full of snobby homophobic religious types, and if it attracts a certain ethnic group I’d like to choose which one so I can practice my language skills and actually enjoy the food when I invite my neighbours over for a pot-luck dinner.

If that’s too much, could you help me with a website that could provide me with just one of the above? For example, does a website like realestate.com.au have a page showing the median rental price for the different areas based on what’s been advertised on there?

Thanks in advance for your help with researching an area to move to.

I’m afraid there is no such site, even for one of the categories except perhaps climate, but you may find these sites useful

http://www.bocsar.nsw.gov.au/ Crime rates in NSW
http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=782 Crime rates in Victoria
Other states also have sites with crime statistics.

You might just need to tell us what sort of things you are looking for and a rental budget and we could give you some suggestions.

Religious or humane person, how much sympathy do you show others who have unforseen things happen to them?

Sympathy, understanding feelings of others!

While the 33 miners were being hoisted to the surface earlier this week, Web searches were not only soaring on the brave men and their families, but also on Jessica McClure, better known as "Baby Jessica."

Another story of others bucked the odds and survived the ordeal tied to the other stories!

After Sabella commented on the Chile situation, Web searches on "ramon sabella" surged into breakout status. Sabella says he was overwhelmed by the attention he received after being rescued. But according to a popular blog from CNN, he remarked, "If the miners can hang on and be normal, spend time with family and friends, they can manage not to be overwhelmed. They’ll be OK."

Lastly, there’s Ramon Sabella. If you don’t remember him, you probably weren’t around in 1972, when Mr. Sabella’s plane crashed in the Andes Mountains. He and a group of others bucked the odds and survived the ordeal. Their story was documented in the movie "Alive."

Before anyone starts casting stones at this woman for having the audacity to lose her job in a depressed area, just consider…it can happen to you any day now. Unemployment isn’t going down. And our wages isn’t going up, even though our elected officials always make sure they vote themselves a raise as much as they can get away with. I always put myself in the shoes of the other person, because I’ve been the other person. My plant closed down within a year after Clinton signed NAFTA into law, putting me on the unemployment line. I was disabled (but not receiving $ for it) & jobs weren’t plentiful for people who couldn’t stand for long periods. That left us to survive on my husbands income, which was as a school bus driver. If our rent hadn’t been cheap, we’d have had to live in our car, like hundreds of other Americans. And while I agree that everyone needs to pay their fair share, where are the agencies that help people stay in their homes? And why couldn’t the bank lower her mortgage once she was on welfare? Even if she only paid a fraction of what her payments were, at least she’d still be in her home with her family. I have no sympathy for the banks. They brought this on themselves by their greed. And it’s only by the grace of God that those of you who throw stones at people like this lady aren’t in her position right now. Don’t get too cozy. The tax man cometh.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sympathy is a social affinity in which one person stands with another person, closely understanding his or her feelings. Also known as empathic concern, it is the feeling of compassion or concern for another, the wish to see them better off or happier. Although empathy and sympathy are often used interchangeably, a subtle variation in ordinary usage can be detected. To empathize is to respond to another’s perceived emotional state by experiencing feelings of a similar sort. Sympathy not only includes empathizing, but also entails having a positive regard or a non-fleeting concern for the other person.

In common usage, sympathy is usually making known one’s understanding of another’s unhappiness or suffering, especially when it is grief. Sympathy can also refer to being aware of other (positive) emotions as well. In a broader sense, it can refer to the sharing of political or ideological sentiments, such as in the phrase "a communist sympathizer". The word derives from the Greek συμπάθεια (sympatheia), from σύν (syn) "together" and πάθος (pathos) "passion", in this case "suffering" (from πάσχω – pascho, "to be affected by, to suffer").

Can we show sympathy toward people who had unforseen circumstances come upon them in ways they did not see coming and powerless without help from others to get things aright again?

Sympathy is a feeling, and most people have sympathy for people who have something bad happen to them. But even better than sympathy is when you actually DO something for others rather than just feeling sympathy.

If you see that someone is having a tough time, don’t say "Let me know if there is anything I can do to help." Those are empty words. Instead, find something helpful you can do, and do it.

Part 5 (Excerpt)

The Loss Mitigation Department at the Bank is not on your side

Welcome back once again my guest Brett Fallon, Brett is a regular guest on the show, he is a registered financial consultant with RG Capitol and AIG Financial Advisors Brett W Fallon welcome back to the show.

It is nice to have the financial advisors perspective on some of these things so many people dont have a financial advisor so for thousands and thousands of people listening right now you are their only option for that, financial advisory services are typically not for the masses but again you are here to help and your services are available to quite a number of people you actually work with fortune 500 companies is that correct?

Yes, I do a number of workshops for fortune 500 companies that are headquartered here around the valley, the idea is to help people create efficiency with all assets, understanding that their home and home mortgage is typically the largest asset that most Americans have and if you are not treating that with efficiency, the retirement accounts and investments accounts, and all the other stuff has to work in concert, so Im happy to weigh in with information and give you my viewpoints and my perspective.

We were talking just a few moments ago about utilizing an expert negotiator when trying to do a loan modification, people are getting mail from bogus service sources, we have already covered that, but from their servicers saying if you need help with your mortgage, help is here, give us a call. Im certainly not going to tell everyone in the world that they cant do their own loan modification because some people are qualified to negotiate on their own behalf, though in my opinion they will still be emotionally attached to it and if they hear something that sounds good, it may be enough for them to essentially bite at the offer which is exactly what the loss mitigation department wants you to do.

It goes back to the disinterested third party, that expert negotiator, negotiator being the key word in that phrase. One of the things we were talking about and I want to make sure that we address this especially in this segment, we are talking about loan modification of mortgages of people that have some financial constraints, some pressure whatever the source of pain is, for them knowing that this option exists to take an existing mortgage loan and modify it to their best or better interest, from what it currently is, so who should and who should not do a loan modification, lets start with that.

Ill tell you and lets start with people who shouldnt do a loan modification. Someone who thinks their interest rate is too high and owes more than the house is worth, feels that they are entitled to a loan modification, is not really a good enough reason or a hard enough hardship for those types of people unfortunately. This is essentially a handout that is being offered because of some of the malpractices, if you will, that were happening within the mortgage industry over the last several years.

With these big huge banks offering these products that were teaser loans, toxic mortgages, as we call them now. We certainly didnt call them that then when the consumer calls me up and says I want that 1% loan thats going to be my ticket. Unfortunately people took theses loans but what they didnt realize is that someday this loan with the ridiculously low interest was going to reset and their payment was going to quadruple and who on earth could have known that the economic times would be as bad as they are and they would have no option to get out of these loans.

So someone who simply finds themselves upside down on their home, owing more on the house than the actual value of the house, does not necessarily need to consider a loan modification. No they may not qualify on those merits alone in most cases.

I just want to make a point, I was reading an article in the wall Street Journal about this stuff and basically the gist of the article was that the average foreclosure on any property in the United States costs the lender $50, 000 from start to finish…
